Extended Participial Phrases (Erweiterte Partizipialattribute)
What are Participial Phrases?
In formal German, relative clauses are often compressed into participial phrases that come BEFORE the noun.
Relative clause: Die Frage, die im Meeting gestellt wurde, ist schwierig. Participial phrase: Die im Meeting gestellte Frage ist schwierig. (The question raised in the meeting is difficult.)
Partizip I (Present Participle)
Infinitive + d → used like an adjective (add declension endings):
| Infinitive | Partizip I | Example | |------------|-----------|---------| | schlafen | schlafend | das schlafende Kind (the sleeping child) | | wachsen | wachsend | die wachsende Bevölkerung (the growing population) | | steigen | steigend | die steigenden Preise (the rising prices) |
Expresses simultaneous action with the main verb.
Partizip II as Adjective
Past participle + adjective endings:
| Example | Meaning | |---------|---------| | das gelesene Buch | the (already) read book | | ein gut geschriebener Text | a well-written text | | die abgeschlossenen Arbeiten | the completed works |
Extended Participial Phrases
The phrase can include objects and adverbs, all placed BEFORE the noun:
- die von der Regierung im Jahr 2020 verabschiedete Reform (the reform passed by the government in 2020)
- ein in der Presse viel diskutiertes Problem (a problem much discussed in the press)
💡 These phrases are common in newspapers, academic texts, and formal documents. Practice by converting relative clauses.
